HAYS HIGH FOOTBALL VS. WICHITA SOUTH

This could have been a trap game.
Hays High was coming off an emotional WAC win on the road against Garden City. And the next week was a showdown between the two top teams in the league.
But the Indians made short work of the Titans in a 57-14 win that was not as close as the final score.
Hays High pulled many of its key players at halftime, and one of Wichita South’s TDs came late against HHS backups.
Tailback Casey Sedbrook wasn’t needed for his usual 100 yards. Instead, the Indians got big plays from fullback Josh Balman and also made plays in the the passing game. Something more for Dodge City to prepare for this week.
Two negatives: injuries and penalties. Balman sprained his shoulder while making a catch late in the first half, and backup tailback David Cardinal and special teamer Kyler Myers both suffered ankle injuries. HHS needs all three players Friday, but losing Balman would be an especially big blow. As for the penalties, some occurred in the second half when second- and third-stringers were on the field. But others were with the starters. A troubling trend is being called for cut blocks. That’s something HHS needs to clean up before the Red Demons come to town.

PREP FOOTBALL PODCAST, WEEK 5

The two parts are a little bit lengthy, but Conor and I go over some good stuff about the Game of the Week (Smith Center at Norton), and another great matchup in Hill City. Have a listen.

TMP FOOTBALL VS. LA CROSSE

Thomas More Prep-Marian couldn’t score enough to keep up with La Crosse on Friday night, losing 55-28 on Homecoming.
But the TMP defense had its problems, too. The Monarchs simply couldn’t tackle La Crosse QB Tayler Stull. TMP was hurt most on the edge, with Stull rolling out and either evading or breaking would-be tacklers.
This week poses a different sort of problem for TMP. Hoisington is a power running team, and the Monarchs had problems on the line against Russell, another power running team.

Trick plays
With his team behind, first-year TMP coach Jon Borer went to some of the trick plays in his playbook.
A pass by punter Joe Roth worked for a first down. A reverse by slot receiver Nathan Zimmerman also worked, but two passes by Zimmerman didn’t. The first pass missed an open receiver, and the second was intercepted.

Kicking game
Roth punted the only time TMP needed to last week, and got off three punts last Friday, but also had another one blocked, which resulted in a La Crosse TD. Roth got off punts of 34, 43 and 42 yards, the Monarchs’ best effort in the kicking game this season.

Passing game
Junior QB Nick Hammeke, in his first full year as a starter — and also learning a new offense — threw for 175 yards and four TDs against La Crosse, but also had three interceptions. He forced a few throws, and La Crosse also had a defender spying him in the passing game, watching Hammeke’s eyes to see where he was going to throw.
