Thomas More Prep-Marian couldn’t score enough to keep up with La Crosse on Friday night, losing 55-28 on Homecoming.
But the TMP defense had its problems, too. The Monarchs simply couldn’t tackle La Crosse QB Tayler Stull. TMP was hurt most on the edge, with Stull rolling out and either evading or breaking would-be tacklers.
This week poses a different sort of problem for TMP. Hoisington is a power running team, and the Monarchs had problems on the line against Russell, another power running team.
Trick plays
With his team behind, first-year TMP coach Jon Borer went to some of the trick plays in his playbook.
A pass by punter Joe Roth worked for a first down. A reverse by slot receiver Nathan Zimmerman also worked, but two passes by Zimmerman didn’t. The first pass missed an open receiver, and the second was intercepted.
Kicking game
Roth punted the only time TMP needed to last week, and got off three punts last Friday, but also had another one blocked, which resulted in a La Crosse TD. Roth got off punts of 34, 43 and 42 yards, the Monarchs’ best effort in the kicking game this season.
Passing game
Junior QB Nick Hammeke, in his first full year as a starter — and also learning a new offense — threw for 175 yards and four TDs against La Crosse, but also had three interceptions. He forced a few throws, and La Crosse also had a defender spying him in the passing game, watching Hammeke’s eyes to see where he was going to throw.
